Keeping the Spirit Alive

Third Reich Berlin

bg

Berlin. The centre of The Third Reich, a Reich that was to have lasted a thousand years. No one can appreciate any aspect of the Second World War unless they can put it in to context of how the conflict came about and how it was conducted from the Nazi German point of view. No action exists in isolation. Our Third Reich Archaeologist and Military Historian has lived in Berlin for 20 years and is a highly respected member of many organisations in Berlin who seek to understand the nature of the conflict as well as preserve many physical aspects for generations to come.

MHT has put together what we consider to be the ultimate Third Reich Tour of this fine capital city. We explore the full 12 years of Nazi power, from the origins and build up to the war and then life in Berlin during the war itself.

We look at examples of Nazi architecture that still exists to this day as well as many examples of buildings that were constructed but destroyed by the war as well as planned projected, some partially completed, some remained a fantasy. One of the finest example we visit is the 1936 Olympic Stadium.

We go on a walking tour of all the key Nazi locations of power in central Berlin – the Reich Chancellery, the New Reich Chancellery, Goering’s Air Ministry, Himmler’s HQ, Goebbel’s Propaganda Office and of course Hitler’s Fuhrer Bunker (Nick’s name is on the notice board as having written the explanation notes).

We visit the Topography of Terror – the museum of the SS located on the site of the former SS HQ and then reflect at the site of the Holocaust Memorial.

Guest are taken on a journey in time that reflects the unfurling nature of events during the war. As it progressed Berlin and it’s inhabitants began to feel the affect of ‘Bomber’ Harris’ “Total War” aerial campaign.

We visit underground air raid bunker systems as well as wander inside the last remain enormous Flak Tower that attempted to protect Berlin.

We also see a very poignant reminder of the cost of war – a church that was left devastated and not rebuilt.

Our last day traces the German Resistance Movement and it’s failed attempt to assassinate Hitler – and the dire consequences. We visit the Bendlerblock, the location of the Army High Command to discuss the German Resistance movement culminating in the July 1944 Bomb plot which climaxed in the courtyard. We discuss the Claus von Stauffenberg story and visit the location of his heroic execution. In addition we visit the museum to the German Resistance. The Bendlerblock, von Stauffenberg and the memorial in the courtyard are pictured below.

Finally we see the key locations of the Soviet encirclement and onslaught for the ground Battle for Berlin, the attempted German Breakouts, and finally we “Storm the Reichstag” then discuss the partition of Germany and Berlin itself by The Berlin Wall.

It is a monumental journey and a life changing experience. What we can guarantee is that along the way we will show you places and tell you stories that you will not get elsewhere and forms part of what we call our “Secret” Third Reich Berlin Trip.
